Teaching is the job that makes every other job possible, and we treat it like a calling so we don't have to treat it like a career. "It's so noble" is what we say instead of "here's a living wage." Pay teachers like they matter. Respect that doesn't show up in the paycheck isn't respect — it's flattery. Fund the classroom like the future depends on it. It does.
